Choosing Furniture

Different styles of furniture can suit different rooms in your home. The most important thing is that it should be your style and your own taste that dictates the general style.

Measure the size and layout of the rooms you are going to furnish, then make a list of the pieces you are looking for based on their purpose and the rooms in which they will feature.

Entrances

A hall table is a sensible inclusion in an entry hall, providing a spot for keys, mail or mobile phones. A display of photographs, homewares and a beautifully placed mirror will also give a hallway personality and individual style.

Living Rooms

A comfortable place to sit is essential in a living room – whether quirky or classic, old world, rustic or refined – a lounge, armchair and other forms of seating have as close a relationship to the body as a mattress. Spend at least 15 minutes sitting and considering the seat cushion, the height of the back and the depth of the seat.

Storage

Few modern living areas do not contain some form of television or hi-fi equipment as well as CDs, DVDs, toys, games, etc. Adequate storage space is essential and you can choose to conceal them or display them. For example open shelving is great for displaying the spines of CDs and DVDs or trunks are ideal for storing spare blankets or children’s toys.

Dining

Dining tables and chairs should be made robust enough to take the knocks of everyday life as well as being a material that is easily cleaned. Timber is ideal for this purpose. Bench seating also has a certain rustic charm and is perfect for extra space as you can stash the benches underneath the table.

Bedrooms

More than a place to sleep, the bedroom is a retreat, a very personal space. A bed reproduced to echo the shape and materials of traditional beds can look wonderful covered in layers of quilts, coverlets and bedskirts. You can dress them to be either pretty and feminine or grand and formal.

Mattresses

When buying a mattress consider comfort and support. As long as you feel that you are getting good support the choice of comfort is completely up to you. Spend at least 15 minutes on a mattress to get a true impression. Mattresses should be replaced every six to ten years.

Home Office

Increasingly the spare room is becoming the launching pad for many a small business. This is not to say that it should feel like a corporate environment - a handsomely appointed office can include a solid desk and walls lined with bookcases which not only look great but can insulate the room against distracting noise.

Outdoors

Comfortable outdoor furniture can turn a verandah or deck into an extension of your home’s living space – the ‘outdoor room’ that you can use when entertaining guests or just relaxing with your family and friends in the summer.
