Settle Into Leather Couches Made to Be Lived On
Leather couches wear in while the rest of your living room furniture wears out, and this collection is full of them. That's leather for you. It softens, darkens, and creases where you sit, taking on character year after year.
You'll find a vintage finish, a leather sheen and a wax pull-up in here. Some sizes suit a quiet corner, others the room the whole family lands in. We've been trading since 1985, so we can tell you how your leather couch behaves in year five rather than year one.
How long does a leather lounge last?
Leather lounges last longer than fabric ones because the hide softens rather than thinning out, though the frame really decides the lifespan. Ours are built on frames including corner-blocked pine, plywood, hardwood and acacia, over steel S-springs, zig-zag or pocket springs.
The upholstery will mark and crease where you sit, and that’s leather doing its job rather than giving up. Underneath, the craftsmanship is what we stand behind, so our frames carry a five-year warranty with fabric, foam, finishing and components covered for two. The frame is the part of a leather sofa you never see and never replace.
What is the difference between leather grades?
Quality leather is graded by how much of the original hide survives finishing, and that decides how a sofa ages. Genuine leather then gets sold under a handful of names, each meaning something specific:
- Full-grain – the outer hide keeps its natural grain, marks and all.
- Top grain – the outer hide is sanded lightly for a more even surface.
- Aniline – dye soaks right through with no pigment coat over it.
- Semi-aniline – a thin pigment coat sits over the dye and evens the colour.
- Split, bonded and faux – these use lower layers, scraps or a backing coat.
Our Melbourne design team picks the grade to suit the piece. That is why this collection runs to top grain, aniline and semi-aniline, alongside buffalo hide and a wax pull-up finish. All of it is 100% leather, none of it bonded, faux or PU.
Do leather sofas last longer than fabric sofas?
Leather sofas do last longer than fabric sofas, and the difference is how each handles mess. Spills sit on the surface of leather and wipe off, while fabric takes them in and frays where it rubs. Leather does show scratches fabric would hide, and it sits cold in winter until you warm it.
Design-led furniture for everyday households is what we've always made, and our leather is specified the same way. Leather earns its place in a room with daily traffic and spills. Our fabric sofas are softer to sit on, so it depends on how the room gets used.
Will a 3 seater leather sofa fit your room?
Our three-seater leather sofas span 201cm to 227cm wide and 95cm to 96cm deep, and the chaise configuration stretches to 265cm wide and 166cm deep.
Measure your doorway and wall run against those numbers first, because most fit problems trace back to one of these:
- Tight hallway or doorway? A 3-seat sofa turns through on its diagonal, so measure the height too.
- Coming from a 2-seater sofa or a 2.5-seater? The extra seat adds width, so the depth stays the same.
- Weighing up a 4-seater or a corner lounge? Both want more wall and floor than a three-seater.
- Chairs already in the room? Seat heights run 46cm to 49.5cm, so check against what you're matching.
- Adding a recliner? The seat extends to about 160cm deep, so measure the floor in front.
Our product pages list full dimensions, seat height, carton size and a weight limit, so you can check rather than guess.
Leather recliner lounge, chaise and fixed seat options at Early Settler
Leather seating here comes in fixed and powered versions, across two- and three-seat sizes. The difference between them is how much the seat moves:
- Fixed seats – Nothing moves, so the sofa holds its shape and depth.
- Electric recliners – Each seat has its own buttoned panel, and the backrest and footrest move together and stop anywhere.
- Recliner with a left chaise – The chaise lounge takes the left, with a powered seat on the right.
-
Single recliner chair – One powered seat on its own, for the one-person spot.
Powered seats need some planning. One range reclines fully with only 10cm behind it, and the power pack needs a socket nearby. How a recliner feels is the part you can't plan, so come sit in one. We have 54 stores across Australia.
Choosing a brown leather couch tone for your room
Light decides the tone, since darker hides soak it up and lighter ones throw it back. Mocha and vintage brown hold their depth in a sunny north-facing room, while light chestnut or chestnut lift a darker one. If you pictured a tan leather sofa, saddle is closest, and fern green breaks from brown entirely.
A deep tone covers more wall on a corner sofa than a two-seater. Finish shifts it again, since vintage and wax pull-up vary across the hide while sheen reads even. Neither shows on a screen, so our team is on chat and phone seven days a week.
Can pets use a leather lounge?
Yes, and leather handles pets better than fabric, because hair brushes straight off a hide instead of working down into a weave. Accidents stay on top too. The honest catch is claws, since leather marks and a deep scratch won't come out.
With claws in your house, a vintage or wax pull-up finish hides wear better than a sheen. Children are the easier case. Sticky hands, dropped toast and spilt juice all wipe off leather, which is the argument for it rather than against it.
Create a timeless living room around leather
Leather sets the weight of a room, so what goes around it either softens that or matches it. Timber coffee tables and side tables keep things warm, while armchairs and ottomans fill the gaps a sofa leaves.
Our lounges & sofas range runs wider than leather, through modular lounges and sofa beds. Entertainment units and buffets hold the walls, and outdoor furniture with sofa sets carries it past the back door.
One design point of view runs across every category, indoors and out. Come back next year for one more piece, and it will still look like it belongs.
FAQs
How do you clean a leather couch?
Clean a leather couch with a soft dry cloth first, then a barely damp one for anything that sticks. Dry it straight away, and keep abrasive cleaners, solvents and baby wipes off the hide entirely. Condition it a couple of times a year, and keep it out of direct sun.
How can you tell if a couch is real leather?
Check the grain, because real leather varies across the hide with pores and small scars, while faux and bonded repeat a pattern every few centimetres. Real leather also warms under your hand and creases softly rather than wrinkling in sharp lines. The label should name the hide rather than saying leather look.
How do you remove stains from a leather couch?
Blot a stain straight away rather than rubbing, since rubbing pushes it into the grain. Grease lifts best with cornflour left on overnight and brushed off in the morning. Ink and dye are the ones to leave alone, because home solvents strip the finish and the mark stays.
